Behaviour change campaign for Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Blackburn with Darwen Council declared a climate emergency in 2019 and set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2030. They facilitated a People’s Jury on the Climate Change Crisis, bringing together 26 residents – a mix of age, gender, ethnicity and attitude towards climate change, chosen from different areas across the borough.

They also set out to deliver a behaviour-change campaign tackling climate challenges in the area.

The ‘One Degree Challenge’ campaign aimed to educate and encourage the residents of Blackburn with Darwen to lower the temperature at home by one degree, as households can save up to £100 a year.

Members of the People’s Jury featured throughout the campaign.

I was the campaign lead on this project. This campaign featured across billboards, digital screens around the town centre and in the bus station, bus shelters, in magazines, on the Council website and on their social media channels. We also ran a social media competition and survey.

Results (3-month duration):

  • 1.4k competition entries & survey responses

  • 96%+ are willing to nudge their heating down by 1°C, the objective of the campaign

  • 71% want to learn more about ways to save energy and money

  • 910k+ social impressions

  • +31% social reach

  • +37% social interactions

  • ‘A’ Grade was recently awarded to BWD for their work on climate change by climate-charity, CDP.
